Showcase cover image for Closet shelves for my granddaughter

Project Information

Our 12 yr old grand daughter asked me last night if I could build here a set of shelves for each side of her closet. She wanted them to be no more that 4 ft high and she drew out the spacing and the width of the shelves. Se said if I make it, she'll paint it. So today I whipped up one set that I'll take over there to make sure it fits .
I think she is going to paint it hot pink or something like that!!
If that works out, I'll make another later in the week.

It has pine 1×10's on the sides and the 5/8 plywood shelves are set in dados and nailed and glued in place. i had to buy the pine and all the rest was scraps from the barn.

Jim, you have to be one if not the busiest LJ's on this site. I can't turn around twice sometimes and you have something else posted. Must be great to love woodworking and be able to do it all the time. I do it every day, but that's just my job. The stuff I love to do gets crammed into some short weekend hours.

I can literally see the placement of these units as I have had similar ones to build for clients. A great way to add storage without stealing room from the opening. Would love to see the pics after she paints them.

Great job as always. Sure it makes you feel real special to have family members that can turn to you when a wood working project is needed. I too would love to see the finish project so maybe you can post that later on.

Thanks for the nice comments, guys. I just took the unit over and it would not fit. The back wall has a bow about 2 ft up and it is a press fit at best. So, tomorrow, I will remove 1/8" off one entire side!!!!!!!!!!! what a treat that will be. I guess I just design too close for fit- it wss made 1/8" under the width.. The next one will have 1/4" clearance going in!!
G'day, Bob. I still have a ton of it!!

After I finish the cleanup, I'll see if it will fit now with 1/8 removed!! Great to have 12" height on the Grizz.

Looks great Jim, I am making a shelf like that for my mom. I'll send you a photo when it's all done. The fact the you used dado joints, instead of just butting them to the sides, really makes it look great. Wish I had a big bandsaw like that, the fact the you can raise the guard really high is awesome. A barn is a great place to get wood. One time I got a bunch of old pieces of walnut out of a barn. A barn is a woodworkers paradise!

Keep up the good work buddy!

Hi AJ. I took it over today and it was tight, but I got it in. I thought a lot about how I was going to take 1/8" off that unit and then I remembered it was 11" and my bandsaw went to 12". I love that saw!!!!!!!!!

Nice work in adjusting Jim, jeez I could do with a 12" band saw, you won't have any problems cutting cubes of plywood in half. A ton eh, beats my store.

Thanks, Rod, that was to smooth out the entry side because the shelves were deeper than the pocket in the closet. She has it in use already.

G'day. Bob. I am presently building a plywood router box, but I did manage to glue up some plywood scraps last night just to see how I liked turning it. It will be a bowl at best. The box will be for fluting round parts in the lathe with a router. Harry1 got me going on that one!!
Cheers, Jim
