Project Information

So I built this contraption a couple of weeks ago. It was dreamed up out of pure necessity. My blades, all of them, were pathetically dull and I kept putting it off and putting it off, because it's darn expensive to have blades sharpened. Retired and all I had to think of something. I'm not naive enough to think that this thing can sharpen a blade as well as a machine but I do think that sharpness in all of it''s forms is relative. This machine actually works quite well. The motor I acquired on a local sale site and thanks to Scotty D's Woodworking answering the add I put out. I chopped it up to a shape I could use and mounted it. The lower table is adjustable perpendicular to the diamond abrasive in micro increments to fine tune the tooth angle. I did the first blade (which you see here) with a 600 grit diamond disk, but it isn't nearly fine enough. I have a 1500 and 2000 in the way. I've been using the blade for a couple weeks now and it's like cutting butter. I forgot how nice the blade was when it was new. Virtually no burn what so ever. I'm happy with it.

Smart Idea. You'll have the sharpest blades on the block for sure.

That looks like it's working just fine .
Nice to have a sharpening machine in the shop .
What size is the blade and what is the motor RPM ?

Very clever! Can you adjust the angle where the diamond disk meets the blade?

I like this idea a lot! I will be interested to hear how you like the finer grit diamond wheels. Please let us know.

One caution - if you've got a chipped tooth that you're trying to fix, start with the coarse wheel. You don't want to 'hog material off' with your 2000 grit.

I made a crappy jig once upon time. Worked ok.

The carbide dust messed with me bad though. Not hospitalization bad but my lungs hated me for a couple days kind of bad. I'd suggest some kind of collection if possible.

@ kiefer 6 inch diamond disk, 5/8 arbor. Motor is an old cordless Circular saw which spins at 2600 RPMs.
@Charlie K. The lower table moves from side to side to change the contact angle of the tooth.
@b3528294. That guy in the video has no control over how much tooth material he's removing or the contact angle. He's just eyeballing everything.

@Stanley Coker. Sorry there are no plans bud. This is the final one of 4 mods and design changes all done out of my head bro, but Copy to your hearts content from the pictures though.

Man that looks like a fun build. Hats off to you for solving a problem. I looked at your other projects and you have an engineering mind. I'm looking forward to see what you come up with next.

That is a real neat setup. I have been thinking about the same thing but have not done anything on it yet. I just took a 60 tooth carbide blade in for sharpening and it $18 to sharpen a a $60 blade.

Do you use any water on the diamond blade to cool it?

Does they blade turn on a central spindle to index the teeth?
