Project Information

This in a second seahorse recipe box this year. It was given as a Christmas present to the daughter of the lady that received the first one. She loves seahorses also so I came up with a different design and has a laser engraver burn it in for me.

It is Oak and Pink Ivory. She liked the oak of her mothers but wanted it lighter so I finished it with General Finishes Water Based Satin. This also kept the pink truer to color (Her favorite color). It's hard to see in the pictures but the piece I received had a great tone of pink.

It measures 7×5 1/2×5/12. I finished it off with a finishing wax. I added a card so she knew what woods were used and added 1 recipe (my favorite birthday cake).

I really struggled with this box for some reason. Around every corner there seemed to be difficulties. I kept trying my best and she loved it. It fit her tastes I hope. There's nothing like handmade gifts.

I can say pink ivory is the hardest wood I have ever worked with. My saws struggled and so did I. It burns instead of sands. It drills like cement. I have some left over and really never want to see it again. :))

Jerry - I created the vector image using inkscape and took it to an engraver. He burned it into the wood for me.

Thanks Pottz. I'm actually surprised they wanted recipe boxes in today's age. They could just as easily set their Ipads on the counter and follow a recipe.

Thanks Jerry. - I like using inkscape to create images. And it's free software.

Thanks Ivan. The woods ended up looking pretty good together.

Thanks Charles, Dean and Bob.

Dark Lightning - Did you make the one for your wife?

Thanks Tom - I kinda winged it on the lid and it turned out nice.

Drewpy, I like your recipe box. Using the magnet that holds it closed to also hold the card is a fine idea. Your joints and splines are well done. The shaped top is a very nice touch and the rim color adds to the look.

For reasons that I can't explain well, splines look better if they are in odd numbers. That doesn't always work out for every build, but it does look better as a rule. This is a tutorial on the jig I use to add splines. The dusty and battered jig I use looks like this.

Beautiful box ! The number of splines and placement looks good to me. You are in charge of your creativity. That's really the only "rule" to follow….....
No doubt she loved it ! Well done !
