Project Information

I have a 2 year old granddaughter. What to make for her Christmas present? While finishing some other small boxes, I loved how the wood felt after the final sanding with 600 grit and wax, buff with steel wool. So I decided to introduce her to all the myriad types and colors wood can have. These are 53 scraps and offcuts- many different types of hardwood- white oak, madrone, tan oak, maple, jatoba, bubinga, monterey cypress, beech, walnut, sycamore, rosewood, zebrawood, acacia, teak, chinquapin, ipe, eucalyptus, cherry and probably more that I can't remember. All sanded to 400 grit with Danish Oil and then a final polishing with beeswax/orange oil. They are strung on a 1/8" brass rod which was then pounded flat on the ends so these blocks will not come off. It's kind of a weird present, but I'm hoping she will like playing with the different pieces. Well, it will either be a big flop or a big hit!

Hey Grandpa….you made a gift for your lovely Granddaughter…that's what counts…I can see her feeling the pieces righ now. A couple years ago we sent a set of wooden toys and trucks to our small Grandson. I received a message from his Mother saying they were not going to let him play with the toys because he might put them in his mouth and" who know just what I added to the wood". I would love to make him more toys but I can see what will happen to them. And I wonder why all the toys and doll house items I made her years ago didn't cause her to get sick.

I'm guessing she'll love it. Really is a great idea for a toddler, almost as good as an empty box!

I would be beyond thrilled to get a present like this, granted I am almost 3 decades older, but still.. Awesome idea.
