Project Information
I had some wormy chestnut wood stored in some rafters and chose this as a Christmas project for the wife. I actually had a non-wormy chestnut 2×4 that I made the legs out of. The top and sides was actually wood given to me by a co-worker so I really saved some money there! This was actually thin stock t&g paneling for the top. Had to panel three pieces of wood. The more character the better with chestnut (check out the lengthy worm streak). This was the first project where I really gave my (new to me) planer a work out. The magazine rack was an after thought…I wanted to build it in to the table itself but she said no and I think it turned out ok. The finish is tung oil…which in my opinion is perfect for this wood. Construction could have cost me a lot more had I chose to buy the mortise jig and bits that I almost went for…instead…guess what…its pocket hole joinery-which I already had.
