Project Information

Well, I finished the chess board. I really appreciate all of the suggestions on the warping problem I had with the first try.

Instead of putting the laminate on both sides, I remilled the maple and walnut to 3/32" and increased the substrate to 3/4". Everything stayed flat!

The overall size is about 20" x 20" and about 1 1/4" thick. Cherry border. Finished with rattle can lacquer.

The customer wanted to keep the price low so I opted to not end match the inlay strips. This pattern was $18.99 for two 36" pieces! If I had end matched the pieces I would have needed at least 4 pieces of the inlay!!

Thanks for looking!

Great job Lew. I've got a bunch of the inlay materials and a book on how to make your own. So give me a shout on you next job.

Good movement Lew! What if, on future similar jobs, you buy the inlay first and, depending the pattern's dimensions, calculate the squares? Do you undestand my point?

Karson- Thanks! I'll take you up on borrowing that book!

Marpintero- Thanks for the idea! I did modify the customers specs slightly to be able to use the ones I got, but I should have actually had them in hand before I started.

Steve and Jay- Thanks!

ashe and Mads- Thanks!

Matt- Thanks! I sanded the "squares" surface to 1000 and then used 4 coats of rattle can satin lacquer.

Smitty and Charles- Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the very kind words and comments. They are truly appreciated. Also, Thank You to all of the views to make this a "Daily Top 3".

That board is too pretty to put away between games, shouldn't that be a small table top?..........(-:

Jim- Thanks! Funny you should mention the table. I was just asked to make a self standing humidor with Queen Ann legs. This will be another first, for me!

Nice work on this Lew, A world apart from Celtic Knot rolling pins, but equally as nice. One of these day's, I will figure how to get that knot in my big rolling handled pins. Here is something you might find of interest.

Rockbuster- Thanks for the kind words and the link to the video. That guy made it relatively simple. I may have to give that a try, if I have to make another project using inlays!
