Project Information

Recently had a request from my granddaughter to make a chess board for her boyfriend for Valentine's day. Apparently chess is big with some teenagers (they both play) because of some show they stream. So I said sure but only if she helps. I cut all pieces (not the chessmen) and showed her how to layout the glueing pattern. Had her start gluing up the squares and she was hooked. She also did the sanding, staining, and finishing. Hopefully I've started something new that she'll take further. Never miss an opportunity to influence your grand kids!
The base of the board was half inch cabinet grade plywood, the squares were half inch wenge and curly maple cut 1.5 inch square, and the outside border was white oak with a walnut trim

99% chance she was watching "The Queen's Gambit" on Netflix. My wife and I just finished it and I am now making a chessboard… slowly

You're right it was The Queens Gambit. A board made by hand makes a great family heirloom. Making it with a grandchild made it really special for me. She was so excited when I said it's finished and now you have to sign your work. We signed it together . Priceless

Hint: on your base board layout your center line vertical and horizontal at exactly 90 degrees. Glue up the center squares first. I used two part epoxy. Be precise as possible . After you place the middle squares turn your board 90 degrees and adjust the squares to meet the center line again. Let the epoxy set 20 - 30 minutes. Then glue out north south east west using wood glue. If you're center squares are aligned the others will fall in place.

An awesome opportunity to bond with your Granddaughter, and hopefully planted the seed that she may return, to make other "gifts". That would be a win win.

Nice job on the board.

You did great Grandpa, no better gift that a chess board. A life long game that teaches way beyond thinking skills. You will be remember with each game and your skill will be appreciated over and over. Thanks for sharing, Joe
