Project Information

I have been working on this chess board for close to a year, on and off. By far the longest time was spent making the actual pieces. There are details and videos of a few on my blog .
The sides of the board box are made of peruvian walnut. The profile was made using a cove cutting setup on the table saw and then routing the multi beads top and bottom. The drawers were cut from the middle of the pieces so that the grain matches when closed. the drawer boxes are some sort of palm wood and the bottom and dividers are quarter sawn white oak. The under side of the box is 1/2" baltic birch plywood as is the top which I veneered using birds eye maple, rosewood, and store bought strip banding. The cast iron stand I found at a local store and took the top off because it was too small to fit the board. I made a new round top with quarter sawn white oak 32" diameter and routed the same profile around the edge so they would look like they matched.
The drawers feature all hand cut through dovetails in the rear and half blind in the fronts. The chess set is a 5" set which means the king is 5" tall to the top and the chess board squares measure 2.25" square, each. The drawer pulls are leftover rosewood from making the dark pieces which are rosewood. The light pieces are curly maple. There are holes drilled into the bottom of each piece to fit 8 penny's exactly for extra weight and a good feel when playing, the bottoms are covered with felt.
Thanks for looking

A wonderful piece of work. I have a 16 year old who wants to do a chess board for his first project. Perhaps some day he will attempt this.

I've seen a lot of chess sets/tables, and made a few of my own, but this may just be my favorite so far.

Man that's a beautiful chess set/table! I can see it now: playing a game, by the fire, glass of bourbon, and a fine Cuban cigar…....!
