Project Information

I made this Cherry box for my wife's friend who has been very sick lately. She's doing better now but hopefully this will make her feel better. The outside is Cherry and Sycamore with Bamboo highlights. The tray is Walnut and Maple with the handle of mixed scraps. Red velvet for the liner. I think the Cherry and Sycamore blended nicely.
Approximately 12'' x 7'' x 5'' h. I had a gloss finish originally and it looked too shiny so I sanded it some and put a satin finish on. Much happier now.
I picked up the cherry maple and sycamore wood from trees cut down in the neighborhood couple years ago. I have plenty to play around with. I always love when I cut the logs to see what's inside.

Thanks for looking.

Dave, the entire box is beautifully done and you choice of materials is outstanding but what caught my eye was the radiused corners.

The quarter sawn sycamore is dynamite, the box ( imho ) overall is great but the tray handle steals the show

Thanks kdc. I was trying to find something good to go with the cherry and found that sycamore.

Thanks SubVette. It's good to know others like the combo too.

Lee thanks. I mostly round off the corners but this time I went a little further. It looks much warmer than sharp edges sometimes.

Hi Tim. Thanks, I'm glad to have projects like this to use up some of those special logs. I have neighbors that always ask me if I'm interested in taking part of their tree. LOL.

Dick, when I started to make the handle I had a tiny piece of spalted maple that grabbed my attention. A little walnut and purpleheart made it look good. Glad you liked it.

Thanks Earl.

Thanks Rich 1955. The cherry has some darker spots but not enough of the sapwood to really highlight it. I think it will look better too after it darkens some.

Thanks Bob. I always feel good about making someone happy with something I made.

Thank you MrWolfe. You know at first I didn't notice the sycamore was quarter sawn. I really liked the stain it had across it. I had to waste some of the piece to get what I was looking for but well worth it.

Hi Dave,
I am sure that Beautiful Box will make your Wife's Friend feel better.

Beautiful work Dave. Really nice wood with some lovely grain. That natural figuring on the lid top and underneath looks great. The splines and the rounded edges and the inside placement of hinges is superb….
You have gone to a lot of effort in fitting the lift out compartments with a nice little lifting handle….not an easy task.
Also difficult is the placement of a liner inside a box. Red Velvet…Very Nice Choice.
Great Project Dave…..FULL MARKS!!!!

Regards…..Cliff.

Well done Dave
You went all out on this box inside and out with properly installed hinges a very nice tray and nice liners .
The combination of different woods is very attractive and should even look better in years to come as it matures .

And yes it's very generous of you to make it for someone that need a lift in life !
