Showcase cover image for Cherry Serving Tray with Purpleheart Splines

Project Information

This is a cherry serving tray with purpleheart splines I made for a friend as a wedding gift. It turned out much better than I though it would. I had no plans and just kind of started building (not really the best way but it makes me learn). This went together pretty smoothly. I only had 2 minor issues:

1. I ended up with a small crack along the length of the solid cherry panel bottom. I re-glued the joint and it seems to be holding up pretty well.

2. Where the corners come together, other trays I looked at (afterward), the curve ends before the joint. This is so that the miter joints are the same height. However, I failed to do that and the miter for the curved section was higher than the long rail. I was able to blend these together with some sanding and I actually think the transition looks really good (picture 3).

I finished this with General Finishes Arm-R-Seal and Seal-a-Cell.

Thanks for looking.

I like the overall look of this tray and especially the way the corners transition. I tend to like subtle curves in the projects I find appealing. This tray has that type of appeal. If I have a chance to introduce corners like this I will do so.
