Nice work John, wouldn't have noticed the butterflies unless you pointed it out. The whole piece looks good to me, love the wood selection. What did you use for a finish?

nice design - i think the uneven spacing of the butterflies looks really good actually.

i'd love to see some more pics - are there shelves inside? what are the approximate dimensions? also, what kind of joinery did you use?

a wonderful piece of furniture. the spacing of the butterflies looks good..not everything has to be so symetrical. Lovely wood choices..nice design. did you turn the vase?? It looks interesting too.

So nice John, really like the off center divider in the doors. Are the spalted panels solid? Also that is quite the cantilever on the base. Beautiful as always.

thank you everyone..finish is multiple coats of wiping varnish, there are adjustable shelves inside, measures 16 deep x 20 tall x 40 long (all these are just off the top of my head.dont have the piece anymore to measure), joinery is loose tenon for the case and traditional mortise and tenon for the doors, and finally the pottery is by my friend Mike Yoder http://www.thevillagepottery.com/mike-yoder.php.

Looks great. I've been wondering for a while… how do you get such perfect butterflies with pointy corners? A router template would get close, but with the outer corners rounded. So I'm assuming you hand-chiseled or carefully sawed some or all of it, which is impressive (my chisel lines never go straight, or somehow chip out). Any tips for a butterfly newbie?

bobasaurus: a very sharp marking knife angled inward and a sharp chisel taking small bites.

WOW, I absolutely LOVE this. This is my new favorite piece on LJ… coolest thing I've seen in a while here. Love everything about it. The design is excellent and all the details are eye candy. Thanks for the inspiration kick.

Two of my favorite woods. Killer work. That top is too pretty to put anything on top of!

After perusing your other projects, I am not only jealous of the access you have to such incredible specimen lumber, but also wowed by your design skills that let all that figured wood be the "star"...

I, too, like the staggered spacing. In fact, I love everything about the piece. Only the craftsmanship tops the materials selection.

Beautiful cabinet and the Spalted Maple panels really add a lot to the piece.
I always thought that you put butterflies where they were needed , so I didn't even give it a thought that there was something amiss….Keep up the great work : )
