Project Information

This dresser is based closely on measured drawings from Robert Lang and Glenn Huey's book Furniture in the Southern Style. The original is in walnut, I think, and has keyholes, and inlays around the keyholes. This one doesn't. It's a pretty massive piece: 56" high by 42" wide.

The wood came from Iola Lumber up the road a ways, where prices are fair and the proprietors are patient and knowledgeable. Unsolicited plug!

The drawer dovetails were done with a smaller Leigh jig, and the case dovetails were done with a jig made with the Stots Dovetail Master, which I think is now sold under the Milescraft brand.

The finish is General Finishes Top Coat wipe-on.

I like a little sapwood in cherry and walnut … call me crazy.

Thanks for looking. I'm overall pretty pleased with how it came out.

I appreciate the comments, especially from such accomplished woodworkers!

A less sympathetic photographer could zoom in on several dozen mistakes in this project of course, but I've promised my wife that I'd quit pointing them out to everybody :)

Yes, so far nobody has commented that the bottom drawer is missing its bottom :) That deficiency has since been rectified.

Thanks for the feedback!

Excellent job on your project Jim. Well done. I have a real preference for Cherry. But damn, that's a lotta dove tails!

This, I like a lot. I can't wait to see it in a year's time. It'll be deep and rich; and some interesting textural stuff will likely come out on the drawer fronts you selected. My kind of piece.

Yes, and since each row of drawers is a different height, not much opportunity for repeat setups with the jig. I never got past "trial and error" with the rabbeted half blind dovetails on the drawer fronts.

Ha, I think every creator could point out all of the mistakes they made. I could certainly do the same to all of my projects. But other's don't know about them and think they're amazing. So it is good to just keep the mistakes to ourselves. ha.

This is a great piece, I especially like how the dovetails are spaced on the drawers. It really gives it the custom made feel
