Project Information

Made two of these bad boys awhile back, a blanket chest for a customer and a toy box for my daughter. They were identical. I went ahead and lined them both with aromatic cedar thinking that one day that toy box will become a blanket chest too. (Although by then it probably won't smell pretty no more.) The cherry had some nice figure, the photos don't quite do it justice. I used boiled linseed oil to try and make the figure pop more, followed by shellac, and then a poly top coat (or 6). Fourth and fifth pictures are of my daughter testing the "Lid Stay Torison Hinges" and it's overall durability. So excited to have found this site!!! Nice to know there's people as excited and as geeky about wood as me.

Lukie,

Nice looking toy box/blanket chest and a cute ornament on the top, too!

Congratulations on your build, it looks great. The finish turned out nicely. Looks like you daughter is thinking of a great hide and seek spot. Welcome to LJ.

Beauty. A work of art.
What was your source for "Lid Stay Torsion Hinges?"

Until I actually read the text below the pictures, I was going to ask how the heck you kept the lid up.
Sometimes I think the folks in here are 100 percent woodworkers and 100 percent artists … I know … the math isn't right, but the facts are.

nomercadies, the hinges came from Rockler, pricey…but well worth the peace of mind. It took 3 of the 60lb. rated to hold up the 48"x22"x3/4" cherry top sufficiently.

This post couldn't be more timely Lukie. I'm close to hinging a similarly sized lid and was unsure of the weight rating until reading of your project. I ordered 3 of the 60 lb hinges and am now confident I guessed right. Thanks for posting such a nice job.

How much does it cost to build something like this? I am suppose to do this exact one for a project so I have been looking around and pricing things.

Kara, I probably got about $300 in it, but 100 of that was those fancy hinges, plus I still have a huge chunk of 8/4 cherry left over from the legs. Hope that helps?!

Thanks I am just looking for a good place to buy the wood. I am in Greeley and have to make 2 of these for a community service project. And ideas would help.

Kara, I got the lumber from Sears Trostel in Fort Collinns. Nice selection, decent prices. If you don't wanna go all the way to FoCo, Woodcraft in Loveland has a pretty nice selection of cherry, A little pricier though.

Shane, Thank you

Kara,
I'm guessing I probably have the same instructions you do, do they look like this?

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have on the construction of it though. You can post here or just send me a PM

Yes those are the only ones I have but its feels like I am missing pages or something. I have even ran it by my father in law who is a master carpenter and he said there is no explaination of how things are mounted together.

Kara,

If you click on my picture it will bring you to my home page. In the upper left hand corner right under my picture is a link that says "send a message". If you want send me your email address, I'll scan and send you what I've got. There's 7 pages total including the cover sheet and the cut list, with 2 pages describing construction…poorly, typos and poor wording. But it might be more than you have.
