Project Information

Hello again, I just finished a new segmented bowl and am looking for constructive comments. The bowl is made from 304 segments of Cherry and Ebony, plus there is an Ebony Plug in the bottom and the top ring is a solid slab of Cherry burl.

My wife says I am too critical of my work. This bowl did not turn out quite like I had envisioned. The goal was to highlight a piece of cherry burl so I made this bowl form cherry and ebony and then used a solid section of Burl for the top ring. The joints are great and I had no construction issues and I don't think the solid burl will have so much movement to cause a construction problem; however, I am not a big fan of the final shape. The goal was to repeat the diamonds form the featured ring on the lip, but to me it seems kind of stilted. What do you think of the final shape? Note - any other comments also welcome. Finish is Watco's Danish Oil.

That would be rather arrogant of me to try to critisize this piece. I couln't come close to something of that caliber in my turning. Fantastic job--and yes, your wife is right, but I know how you feel.

My advice to you would be to produce more of this caliber. As for the shape, yes it is a little different, but in a good way. I think you should be very proud of the result, both technically and artistically. I know I would be.

My 2 cents….Technically speaking, you are right, the joints are great and I like your design idea. Repeating the pattern on the rim looks great. I agree that the shape is not pleasing (to me), I feel like the burl should be rounded to match the shape of the bottom-less flat. Sometimes the wood dictates what we do with it. Would I be proud of it? ABSOLUTELY!!!

Coloneldon,
I'd be very proud of it. If you're not, just send it on over and in return, I'll send back some really unintended results of projects. All kidding aside. The overall design is very pleasing to my minds eye! The consruction and craftsmanship are superb. The Cherry Burl is just beautifull. I believe your wife in this case, the completed project is wonderful no matter what the intended vision was! Take care and Keep on Keeping on!

Sincerely,
Ken McGinnis
