I recently completed a chalkboard/message center project. I bought the chalkboard -- it is porcelain coated steel on a 1/2" MDF backer -- so it also holds magnets. I used Sapele for the frame and trim, and I had some spalted Maple and cut that into veneer and used it on a little pocket to store mail or maybe a phone. I finished it with oil and poly.
