Showcase cover image for Celtic Knot for Golf Buddy

Project Information

I have a golf buddy that moved to North Carolina over the summer and I wanted to make him something for his new home. He will also have 10 years sober next month so this is what I came up with. I made a box for him to hold his anniversary coins and daily meditation book.

Material - The body is mahogany and the rest is leftover black palm I had from a project I posted a few week ago.

I decided to use the Trinity Celtic Knot on the lid because of it's diverse meaning. For some it symbolizes the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and to some it symbolizes mind, body and spirit and so on. I Thought it could symbolize service, unity and recovery like the AA triangle. He's Irish and I didn't want it to scream AA in his new surroundings; Not that he would care. I added green felt to the bottom to add a little Irish green.

I was going to add a shelf for his coins but in talking with his wife she said he is more of a "just throw it in there" type of guy. HAHA

The fifth picture really shows the palms end grain which I am currently fascinated with. The last picture shows the cardboard cutout of the symbol and the finished finished piece.

Finish - The finish is 5 coats of General Finished arm-r-seal.

I have never attempted intricate inlay so I just went with the layered approach. I had seen it used before and thought it looked kinda cool. I also wanted to get this out to him before his anniversary date.

Thanks for looking - Drew

The handle is a nice touch. Subtle and understated but adding to the whole. Looked at your projects and I can see the skills getting better and better!

I'm waaaay behind you on box making! LOL!

Nice box and I like the three D effect of the palm overlay .
I like your thinking giving the box a special meaning .

Black palm is a neat looking wood especially the end grain ,I will have a look for some .

Great job Drew. Did you do your cut out with router. I do a lot of inlay on my boxes, but I've never done the cut outs.
By the way, my baby brothers name is Drue. Just spelled different.
