Project Information

This was a badly needed project as I had one bedroom single window that has the uninvited morning sun beaming in.

Adjustable to different angles awning.

This was a quick project, I just worked the details in my head as to what I wanted and how I was going to build it. All together with hardware and materials cost was around $60.

I used all red cedar starting with 2 - 2"x4"x8' cedar boards, 14 - 6' cedar fence pickets sawed to 4.5" wide cut to 44" long, 2 - 5/16" x 5" lag screws, 4 - 5/16" x 4" hex Galvanized bolts with 5/16" nuts and washers.

I spaced each step 3" apart on a 45 degree angle using my tri square as the guide per cut. I first taped both side rails together and marked the lines to cut so they would be even across. I also taped them together when drilling the 5/16" adjusting holes so that they also would be even. Each slat is secured In Place with a 1 1/4" torque screw.

I used the lag screws on top to anchor the side rails to the support brace adding flat washers in between to allow for the henge (swing) and used the bolts for the supports to be removed for adjusting the awning.

Thanks for viewing.

This is a good idea! The cedar should weather well. I like the adjustable arms. Wondering how you decided on 44-inches? The windows looks taller than that from the photos. I was thinking if the awning completely covered the window when lowered, the awning could serve double duty as storm/hurricane protection.

Thanks Art, the 44" is the width not the length, sorry for that confusion. The length I cut to 3', I'm here in central TX, safe from the hurricane weather, but yes it could function as window protection from high winds.

I recently did an awning for rain deflection on the doorway to my Katty Shack feeding station. Maybe I should take the time to post it. Like your ceder and slats approach

It looks fully functional Blackie, and a good brownie point earner with the family as well!

Thanks Tony, Tom, Rob and Larry.

By using the open slat method it still allows me to see outside into the back yard while at the same time blocking the sun.
