Cedar & Cypress Swing

Finally finished this project!! This swing started out to be a mother's day gift for my sweet wife, Paula. Due to unexpected circumstances, I didn't complete it and get it hung until last weekend. Started working on this around the first of May, then on May 19th I tore my biceps tendon loose at my left elbow, and had to have surgery to repair it. For several weeks I wasn't able to do anything, except sit around and be miserable. As the arm healed and the pain subsided, I started piddling around with putting the swing together as best as I could with one arm. One board at a time, one bolt and one nail, it started to take shape. The seat and back supports are full 2" x 6" cypress, the seat slats are 3/4" x 2 1/4" x 6' 2" red aromatic cedar. You might notice it is a full 6 foot 2 inches wide, so that we can lie down and nap in it if we want to. For the armrest supports I used 4" diameter cypress posts sawn in half. The armrests are red cedar with natural edge on one side, straight edge on the inside. I used my new Dewalt jig saw and rounded the ends. I decided I didn't want to bore holes in the armrests, so I used a couple of 1" x 6" treated boards to hang it with. My friend Olen sawed all the lumber for this project and even provided the cypress poles to hang it with, and yes he even helped me hang it. It's always good to have great friends to help you out when you need it. The beautiful watermelon quilt is the handiwork of my wife, Paula.
