Project Information

Here is a project that I started a long time ago but it got put on hold for many reasons and excuses.

Anyways each step of the project was a learning experience.

I purchased the precut forms from a canoe builder.

The wood strips used were cut from 18' near clear cedar 2×4s. I cut them down to ¾"x1/4" strips then took
bead and cove router bits to the edges.

Fiberglassed using System 3 epoxies.

Other wood used: oak for the seats, white ash for the thwarts and walnut for the breast hooks and gunwales.

Thanks for look'n.

Beautiful canoe-I always admire you woodworkers who have the patience and commit the time to build one of these strip canoes. Congratulations on a job well done!

Beautiful -that is one of my next projects ,my idea is to use indigenous woods to South Africa using Cape Hollly and White Alder for weight and inlays out of a few others.

Great job! It's on my bucket list, but the old I get the less likely it seems that I will get to it.

Great looking canoe! The bead and cove construction sounds interesting. It would be nice to see the details of that.

Total envy, that's what I'm thinking about right now. I keep telling myself that someday I will get to make my own boat. But for now all I can do is stare and gawk at your work, envious as all heck.

Beautiful job! I have also had it on my list of things to do for years now. Honestly, I think it's the fiberglass work that holds me back. Honestly, how bad was it?

An old carpenter I used to work with told me once, you're not a complete woodworker until you've built a wooden canoe…. wasn't sure exactly what he meant until I saw the one he built.

Some day soon, I hope I can build one as nice as yours.

very nice. I'd be afraid to scratch it, it's so nice.

Sweet-looking canoe. I've wanted to build one for ages. Someday I'll take the plunge and try to make something similar.

Great looking canoe! .... mind me asking what the final weight is?

I love looking at these projects and always dreamed about making one.

The aluminum paddles gave me a chuckle…. perhaps a bent shaft paddle for a follow on project :^)
