Project Information

First, I constructed the base of the tree. It is 13 ¾" square and 3" tall. I would have made it closer to 16" but I was only using scraps form around the shop, so this was the max size I could manage. The top and bottom plywood squares of the base are recessed in rabbets to hide the plywood edge. The holes are just small enough the cat toy balls I placed inside won't roll out.

The legs are turned from 4X4 post to a diameter of 3", however after adding extra thickness of the carpet and rope they appear bulky (probably 2 ½" would have worked better). The carpet (which is an old area rug) was then cut and stapled down and the rope is hot glued in place (25' roll of 3/8" rope was used). The legs and plat forms are screwed together. Lastly, I added the last two pieces of red oak around the sides of the top platform with some pocket hole screws.

This was a fun weekend scrap wood project and I can guarantee it is sturdier than any store bought version. Over all it is 32" tall and the base is 13 ¾" square, however the middle platform sticks out a few extra inches. Over all though the new kitten loves it!

Matthew Stillwell
