Project Information

I built an assembly/outfeed table a while back but forgot to add it as a project, and always intended to build a case of drawers to fit into it. I got the basic plans from the book Woodworking 101 and altered it somewhat to fit my needs. I made the whole unit out of birch ply from the BORG. Carcass is 3/4", drawer frames are 1/2", and drawer bottoms are 1/4". It took me much longer than expected but I was trying to be careful and not make mistakes. I think it turned out quite satisfactory (my wife said it was too nice for the workshop!).

Sorry I forgot to get pictures of the build in progress before being installed in the table, but there was really not much to see. Mainly it just took a lot of measuring and re-measuring to make sure that everything fit just right. I think making the drawer bottoms wider to fit into dadoes in the sides worked out well and saved a lot on drawer slides (that idea was in the book). The end result is perfectly adequate for shop furniture. Now I just need to cut drawer liners for all of those drawers!

I made something very similar to this for my drill press to sit on. Best shop accessory I've ever made. You'll love having this.

Nice job.

I like this style of drawer…. especially if you add plastic (UHMW) strips in your dados.

"To nice for the shop?" Why is it they alway assume that the shop is only worthy of ugly, junky storage solutions?

Kelster: Thanks! Is it too nice for the shop? :)

Matt: Thanks, the plastic strips are a good idea but too late. I might try that next time if there ever is one. And yes that is what I thought when she said it was too nice for the shop. So, I spend a lot of time out here and I can't have nice things?

Very nice case, I am in the process of doing the exact same thing for my MOAT. I really like the idea of making the bottom of the drawer the slide. Pretty nifty and the savings on slides is nice. I will have to utilize this.

One question about the UHMW strips, do you cover the whole dado with the strips? Just trying to get a visual of how it would be done. It is a great idea.

Good job and keep up the good work.

Seems like a great piece for your shop. I've been afraid to use that type of drawer slide. Let us know how you like that set up.
