Project Information

My Granddaughter was such a fan of my carvings, I couldn't resist carving things for her.

I've done quite a few carvings like this, which is kind of rare for me, but I made them as gifts.

I love Hummingbirds, they're so feisty, & fun to watch.

I even taught a carving class of beginning carvers using this pattern.

My students all did a fine job with this, so I think its a pretty good beginners project.

I love this one in Black Walnut. I guess because its my favorite carving wood.

The size is about 6" x 8"

This was done in 1993.

Here's some more Hummers!

you are such an inspiration Mr. Cain.

Do you still teach carving classes? I remember when I was a kid my dad used to go one evening a week and teach carving classes. It was fun to see the things they did in class.

Thank you Mark.

No, I haven't done this for quite awhile now.

The organization that sponsored it, quit doing so.

It was fun, but it takes a lot of time preparing for a class.

It's much more fun, just enjoying my own time to myself.

That's some very nice work Dick;

Wouldn't it be nice if we could make a living with carving like these?

I'd sign up!

Thank you Alistair.

They're so fast you can't even see them fly past you,

but the noise from their wings is something else.

We were using about 10 pounds of sugar a week making nectar for them.

So beautiful Dick and the great thing about it is it will be here for a long long time for your granddaughter to tell her children about her Grandpa that used to carve so lovingly for her. God Bless Dick and Barb.

Just last week I bought a small set of carving tools and two of your beautiful carvings were seen on the LJ. This inspires me to start somewhere. Very nice carvings Dick & Barb Cain.

Wonderful carving Dick. It is very similar to a water colour my son did for us.
