Project Information
For the past few years we have been going family camping and as a woodworker I like to spend time passing on the craft to my nieces and nephews. My daughter is a very talented crafts person and we try to come up with a new project each year that is age appropriate for all the children. We really enjoy teaching them to use their hands along with their brains to accomplish what seems to be impossible to them when we first share the craft of the year.
This year we made planter boxes with trellis backs and the goal was for them to work together with their sibling and communicate and agree on the next step and what the final project would look like.
The bottom box was to follow the plan that we discussed and make that part all the same. Then they would draw a picture of the trellis and it was to be creative and not follow any plan. But they had to agree. After some discussion and lots of " this is what I want, but its probably too hard to do" we talked about how the difficult things are the most worth doing. As Walt said " If you can imagine it, you can build it" They all had a masterpiece to take home and grow a vine in and every time they see it they will remember how they made it with their own hands when they thought it was impossible.
I love my family and I love to build with the kids and talk to them about making decisions. That is what we woodworkers must do every day in the woodshop and it is also nice to show them how to be creative.
My birthday happens to fall on our trip and I got this fantastic sign that says it all.
