Project Information

I was looking for a hefty camping all around knife but couldn't find one I liked so figured I'll make one. For a long time I've wanted to get into knife making but do not have the metal forging setup. This time around I went with a blade kit from https://www.knifekits.com which overall is pretty nice. blade arrived pre-sharpened to scary sharp levels (unexpected) and a set of curly maple scales (no, I did not use it as I wanted a darker look). Looking at their website now, they do seem to offer all kind of scale options (but at the time it was "random scales of sellers choice").

For the scales I ended up slicing up a scrap rosewood I had laying around waiting to be put to a good use. sizing was perfect for this. Since I no longer have any of my power tools, I ended up ordering a ryoba and dozuki from https://www.katzmoseswoodworking.com/ which worked out great! It's been a while since I actively did any cutting, so was a good excuse to get back to it.

Overall, many rooms for improvements, but this was more of a play around with type project and learning as I go along. overall pleased with how it came out, and know what to do better next time around.

Hey guy, Long time. Nice knife. It has the look of being around a long time.

Way, way back I was always notified of your project posts. Getting a notice today I looked and hadn't realized that your last one was 2013. I didn't realize it had been such a long time since I'd seen one of your creations.

I hope all is well with you. You still in Mass?

Thanks guys!

@Dan - I sold all my power tools and machinery (wood shop and machine shop) and moved to nor-cal about 5 years ago and have been shopless ever since. real estate is a commodity here I cannot afford (my "shop" is a Rockwell jawhorse, some planes and chisels, my faithful frames and now a couple of pull saws added to the collection).

VERY nicely done !!!

looks as good or better than the ones you see in an Outfitter's Store !!

one thing that I would add is a piece of small brass or stainless tubing in the hole in the handle.
should anyone ever tie a string through the hole as it is now, a good tug could possibly pull out wood.
the tubing can be found in most Box Stores - it's still not too late to do that.

Well, I'm sure the move was necessary. I know you had limited shop space in Lexington. We constantly hear about fire and smoke here in the east. You in any of those areas?

Thanks for the recommendation - that's a great idea and I'll add that. originally I was planning to relief carve the wood around the lanyard hole (and also server as a make shift hammering surface of sorts), but ended up leaving the wood. the tubing will definitely help strength and longevity!

We are in the midst of the fires and smokes, the sky IS falling (ashes) and it's been a surreal few weeks now with high heat, and orange sky all day long. I guess that's the price we pay here for the convenient weather the rest of the year.

That is a great knife!

I hope that all works out for you with the crazy fire season. My wife has family all over CA. So far, none of them have had to evacuate, but it sure is a scary time.

We are still in the same old house here in MA.
