Project Information

Hi All

This was a specially made small batch of five boxes, commissioned by the Designyard in Dublin, for one of their clients. They liked our Oak Furnace trinket boxes that are on display at the gallery, and wanted to incorporate a butterfly theme, so what could be more fitting for butterfly wings than a bookmatch in Oak Burr. Each lid is bordered using rich brown American Walnut and the inside lid is lined with black lamb nappa.

The boxes are finished throughout with several coats of blonde shellac prior to waxing.

I will post some info on how to achieve the best book match possible soon!

Cheers

Ian

Superb as usual Ian. The matches are perfect and the Walnut sets them off beautifully.

I'd like to rave on but these boxes speak eloquently for themselves.

Ian,
Your design skills jump to the forefront once again. Elegant little creations. Wonderful combination of uncluttered and superbly detailed. The front inlay/applique seems perfect. Hints at something almost oriental (as with some Japanese cabinet hardware) yet also your preferred Deco detailing. Really nice. If I saw this box on the other side of the world, I would recognize it as an Ian Hawthorne box.

Absolutely wonderful, the walnut border is a stunner combined with that burl. The shellac & wax finish is so sweet too!

Beautiful work! I like the contrast of the bold accent in the front against the intricate burr on the lid… perfectly balanced. The craftsmanship is top notch.

Absolutely inspiring and beautiful work. I love your youtube videos. Amazing watching how you put your boxes together. Are most of your box sides solid hardwood? Most of the larger boxes look like you build them with solid sides and veneer the tops and botoms to plywood. After looking at your work last night I was so inspired I started my next box. Thanks for sharing.

Love your boxes, Ian. I'm trying to come up with some box ideas myself, and would like to be able to perfect your skill, but that seems inevitable I think. Anyway, I can have fun trying. Hope you don't mind, I've added you to my buddy list. Take care and keep up the good work.

OK, maybe I can get all my tools on eBay and sell them before anyone knows I work with wood. You elevate our craft to a new level my friend. Congratulations.
