Project Information

I usually have a couple projects cooking (I'm still using woodworking to keep my mind off whiskey evenings - which has become arguably easier as I near 6 months of sobriety on Friday) so forgive the frequent posts.

This came out of an odd-shaped piece of burl from my neighbor's mother's wood pile. Had no idea what it was going to be and even thought bowl at first. Then, I saw where it could be a box.

Just my own opinion… it could be one of my best. And I'm still slow cutting those lids off with a pruning saw.

The lighter base, interior and back were coated with Modern Masters Dead Flat Varnish before polyurethane to keep the wood from darkening.

Initially, the piece was very balanced, but tipped a little bit to one side. I didn't want to grind the base down any farther, so I ordered and attached my first foot… and I really like how it looks.

I already had someone make an offer on this one, but I'm not ready to part with it yet!

As always, thank you. The one I roughed out this morning will be pretty plain by comparison, but I'm seriously considering a music box.

Is that cliche?

I like the variation in the wood. Smooth to textured and the variation in color. Well done.
