Project Information

I had ordered some box hardware online, and it arrived Monday. As I studied it, an idea came to me, which I suppose would most likely be considered a jewelry box… or just an ornate box.

It was probably just an excuse to load a box with hardware.

I'm sure the design isn't unique, but it's unique to me.

I cut this large piece of wild cherry gall into a rectangle using my clamp setup and Sawzall. Then, using a pruning saw, I cut the two lids (and then cut the top lid in half).

The rest was just burrowing out the storage declivities, sanding, and adding the hardware.

It's finished with a glossy polyurethane. Oh, this is the first box that I've added little legs too. I had a piece of dowel that I cut into pieces and stained with dark walnut.

Van - Have you considered concealing the hinges by recessing them between the layers?

I'll have to give that a shot on the next box! For this one, I like the way the hardware juxtaposes with the wood.

Beautiful project…You are getting some really nice pieces to work with…they are beautiful…Good looking boxes…the pulls are fine the latch is fine, but those hinges really set these pieces back a step…They are not beautiful…Only thing I'd change…IMHO…

You are really getting alot out of those few tools…You have good vision…Cool man…

I do hear you on the hinges. I will give the hinges more thought on future boxes!

Thank you! So far my hardware purchases have been limited to Ace Hardware (though I did have one online purchase).

Those straight cuts are helped along by my grinder after the fact!

I really like the primitive aspect of your creations from the selection of the wood to the method of creating them and finally your choice of hardware. Well done!
