Project Information

This is a built-in entertainment center I built for my family, finally! I've been so busy building them for other people, that it has taken me forever to get to ours. We are very pleased overall. I pushed the mounting panel for the tv out towards the front to keep the screen from being hidden too much from the side. This also gave me a whole lot of space behind for wiring. I cut 2 good sized holes behind the tv in order to be able to reach behind it and deal with any wiring issues. The tv is also mounted on an articulating arm, this allows me to be able to pull it out over 20" from the panel (I don't remember the exact number). I was definitely disappointed in the prices of all the LED lights I found online, but the were really what I wanted. They are also dimmable. We will be adding handles to the doors (not my call!).

Lovely, very crisp looking and very nicely proportioned.

Construction…?... MDF, plywood, solid wood face frame???

Real nice, I like the symmetry with the speakers and the electronics. Did you build a false back behind the electronics to run the cables? Am always bamboozled about cable management.

cheers

There is probably more than 10 cubic feet of space hidden behind the tv where wires are. The speaker wires are up under the shelves they are sitting on, I have not completely hidden those yet, I will be putting a trim board under the shelf with a slot cut into the back of the board to hold the wire. All the component wires are behind the components, but not behind a backer board. I will be building screens to hide the components eventually.

I sprayed it, it is probably the 3rd or 4th job that I have sprayed now. I sure wish I had started spraying a long time ago!

Beautiful job! I am hoping to build something similar. Did you design this from scratch, or are you working from some plans I might find somewhere?

I designed it myself. I looked at several pictures online of other units and picked out aspects that appealed to me. I also added some parts myself.

Hi Mike. I am going to be building something similar in my house soon, only this will be my first time building something like this and I am not a pro. So a question.

How did you go about mounting the tv? Is it mounted on that back panel we can see in the picture? If so, how do you domthat securely? or is it mounted to the actual wall snd screwed into the studs? if the latter, I guess you just extended the mounting system out as far as you can, then built that false back wall around it?

I want my final piece to have the same look as yours - with a "floating" tv, and not just resting on the shelf, so I've been a bit perplexed how best to handle that.

The tv is mounted to that panel and also into a 2×4 frame that is behind the panel. The tv mount that I used can extend up to 30" out from that panel, so I needed plenty of support for that torque. The 2×4 frame is screwed to the studs in the wall, then the tv mount is lag bolted through the panel and into the 2×4 stud. Maybe overkill, but I'm not taking the chance of dropping a $1000 tv! ;)

The mount I used was similar to this:

https://www.google.com/shopping/product/14712690641524268810?hl=en&sclient=psy-ab&q=low%20profile%20articulating%20tv%20wall%20mount&oq=low+profile+articulating+tv+wall+mount&gs_l=serp.3...24570.26759.2.27098.12.12.0.0.0.3.184.1439.3j9.12.0...0.0...1c.1.5.psy-ab.2WBvdrD3Yvk&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.43287494,d.dmQ&biw=1366&bih=619&wrapid=tlif136327958307110&sa=X&ei=Df9BUYyfDLfk4APH0YA4&ved=0COMBEPMCMAU

But it wasn't that exact one, I don't remember where I ordered it from, but it had less than 1" profile (I think).
Good luck in your build and let me know how it turns out or if you have any more questions!

Mike, thank you so much for that information. Very helpful.

Because I'm quite dense, I have a follow on question for you though. Is the 2×4 frame you mentioned just a simple frame that sits flush against the wall (and bolted to the studs), or does the frame have some depth to make up the difference between where the wall (and studs) are to meet the forward position where the visible whilte panel is? I'm just trying to visualize the bones behind the great work I'm seeing here. Sorry if none of this makes any sense!

Imagine a cube made out of 2×4's. This is screwed to the studs. The depth of the cube equals the distance the panel is pushed out.
