Project Information

This is my third project involving concrete and I'm really enjoying finding new possibilities with this material. The cost for my 250 pound table was around $100. Because of the weight, I decided to pour it in place. The structure is made from 2 - 4×4's and 2 - 2×4's. The top is made from one cement board and 4 bags of 60 pound concrete. I had a little left over.

That's the short story. Below is the long story explaining the ball and claw picture.

On of my previous projects made of 2×4's received way too much attention. I gathered that people really like projects using dimensional lumber. Then, Tommy Mac had a show on how to carve a "ball and claw" leg. It wasn't until I was at Lowe's and saw some really nice douglas fur 4×4's that I put the two together. I started carving my legs and was really happy with the results, especially considering my limited experience in carving and the type of wood I was using.

But then… I saw a table at Thomasville that was higher than a normal table but shorter than a bar table. Apparently it's called a gathering table. I never liked the ball and claw style and was only doing it for bragging rights so I scrapped that project and went for the cleaner legs. Because I already have so much time invested in the previous idea, I might finish the carvings and make another table but it'll be for someone else as a gift.

Novel approach, Scott.

I was wondering what you are using to seal the concrete? You could end up eating a lot of concrete dust otherwise.

one cement board and 4 bags of 60 pound concrete. Wow, how thick is it?
How about that for a router table top, heehee

Yeah, I haven't sealed it yet but eventually I'll use a penetrating sealer. It's not as smooth as I would like so I'm going to have to buy a wet stone polisher. It could have been smoothed out during curing but I had to leave the house during those critical hours and missed the window.

On a previous project, I used a two part resin and that worked great but it feels like plastic.

It's 1.5" thick over the cement board and 1 3/4" around the perimeter.

I think the leg is the right look for the table. I've messed with concrete a couple of time and can appreciate what it takes to get the project out of the forms. Nice job.
