Showcase cover image for Bubinga Veneer Box

Project Information

Last week I showed off the rosewood veneer I got hold of. My second veneer piece is made with some bubinga veneer I bought at the same time. I found this veneer less brittle, and easier to work with overall.

In case anyone wonders about the inlay on the top not meeting at the corners, it WAS intentional. I swear. LOL! I was using up some scrap pieces and did not have enough of the same pattern to go all the way around, so I used one type for the front and back, and a slightly different pattern on the sides. I made the conscious decision not to have them meet, since they were not identical.

Thanks, Guys.

Mrtrim, after I did what I had decided to do with the inlay, I realized that it sure as heck looked like I ran two of the four edge pieces through the router table with the wrong side closest to the fence.

And the reason I know that is what it looks like is…...oh…DAMHIKT!

WOW, that looks great. I've never done any veneering, never thought too much about it, but that really looks good. That's one of the things I like about this site, always seeing something that raises the bar.

Thanks. The lid is about 13 1/2×8, and overhangs the box by 1/2" on each side. The interior is about 7" deep.

Great looking box, the veneer work is awesome. I can appreciate the amount of work that goes into a box having just built one.

Charlie you have got that veneering down quite well - and you inlay work is almost there, just a little short :)). I understand that you intentionally made the inlays not meet - the end result is great. I personally rarely make a conscious decision, but I try. Good looking box and the pool ain't bad either.

Beautiful work as always. I think it's facinating to follow the infinate number of woodworkers visions of a simple 6 sided box. I guess I say this because there seems to have been a bit of a surge of boxes lately and it's fun (and educational) to compare the different styles and approaches. Anyway, love this one Charlie and thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks again to everybody. I have a good bit of this veneer, so I'll be trying to come up with some ways to put it to good use.
