Project Information

This is a kerfing plane which is used to cut a kerf around the perimeter of a board which then makes a nice guide for resawing with my frame saw

I used my old plow plane as a model, see the last photo. It had decoration on the arms, fence and arm supports so I tried to duplicate that on my arms, fence and bridle.

For the hardware I used stuff in my shop including using drill bits for the bridle guide posts.

Cut out the body and auger the handle and arm holes.

Cut the slot for the blade.

Use the treadle lathe for the arms.

Stair step the moulding profile with skew rabbit plane.

Moulding profiles finished with moulding hollow and round planes.

Stair step the corner of the moulding with saws.

Create the hollows and rounds on the corner with rasps.

Saw the bridle in half.

Glue the arms.

Ready to finish and bolt together.

I like the minimal hardware approach.

What all can one do with a kerning plane? It seems somewhat limited. I do appreciate the excellent craftsmanship.

Beautiful tool, Scott, impressively crafted! Am I seeing this correctly? You clamped the saw blade stationary and ran the body of the plane back and forth to create the slot?

Carl_unplugged, if you don't have a band saw then this is great for making veneers or resawing boards, along with the frame saw. Beyond that you could also use it to cut rabbets, dadoes, and grooves.

CFrye, yes you are right, I clamped the saw blade in place at the right height and depth, then just ran the body back and forth to make the slot.

swirt, yes I agree, I didn't want to buy a bunch of fancy hardware when I could make it all work fine with just plain fasteners. This project cost nothing since I used scrap wood and hardware from my bins, and I used an old frame saw blade that I didn't need.

Oldtool, I had a blade laying around that I wasn't using that is 9 tpi rip. It was made for a 27 inch frame saw so I just cut it down to size.
