Project Information

Walnut and Maple - 14" x 10.5" x 1.75"

I made a brick and mortar style cutting board earlier this year. I was inspired by, and followed the method I learned from Derek McCrone's youtube video you can watch here.

I also decided to sign my work by chemically etching a 1/8" thick brass plate with Ferric Chloride. My logo and the method I used was inspired by a Wood Magazine "how-to" article that you can read here.
I purchased the brass plate (link) and the Ferric Chloride (link) from Amazon.
I have a Silhouette Cameo, so instead of using screen printing photo emulsion as they do in that article, I used Oracal 651 vinyl as the etchant relief and it worked very well. Also, I would've used my electric scroll saw to cut out the brass disc, but I was out of blades. I used a dremel with metal cutting disc instead. It got the job done, but it wasn't ideal because it gets the brass hot and and a little unwieldy. I wouldn't advise using the bandsaw in a pinch as I did at first, unless you know what you're doing of course. The part is too small, a tooth caught and subsequently bent the first attempt disc.

The project was fun to make and I learned a lot in the process.

Your brick wall board almost looks real. Nice touch with that logo.
