Project Information

Well it's Christmas time again 2013…....As in my earlier project posts, I make tools for my three sons, brother-in-law, & a friend. The Try Squares plans came from ShopNotes issue 150.

The first & last picts. are of the prototype. As I was making them, I ran into a lot of problems, i.e., splitting of the wood, rivets not holding, & countersinking the screws. I had to deviate from the directions somewhat. However, I made it through as you can see. In pict. three, the 5 large sqs. & the top small sqs. are made of Purpleheart, & the bottom small sqs. are made of Rosewood. The other picts are just for fun.

Those sure are nice, Ed. Is that a brand or a bird? That's quite charming. Those gifts will certainly be well received.

...uh, errrr, duh, hope I am one of your friends…

Nice adjustments. And to think you had us make wood try squares in the workshop you conducted… hmmm, were we short changed? Could have had brass?

For info: Ed runs our Mason Dixon Woodworkers workshops and has lead us into many very interesting projects…

Those are absolutely beautiful squares. I remember seeing that issue, but yours came out ahead of the ones in the magazine. I will have to add these to my list of things to build that I'll never find time to build.

Ed,

Really great work! I would love to take these on some day. Can you tell me what brass stock you used? There are several options on McMaster Carr; I don't know which is best for this application.

Again, fantastic work!
