Project Information

For Mother's day two years back, I made these boxes for my mother and mother-in-law. The plans were in Wood Magazine.

Sapele finished in Watco Danish oil and Briwax. I am really fond of Sapele, but the ribbons being at diagonal angle to the edges always give me the impression of the box being out of square (more evident in the hummingbird box). It does not seem to bother others. I found the tiles online at a fairly reasonable price, but the shipping was another story, these things are heavy. I am glad I got the tiles before starting because they ended up being slightly different dimensions, so each had to be custom fit for it's own box.

The frustrations I suffered during this project motivated me to later replace my folding Ryobi tablesaw with a Jet Proshop and I have not regretted it.

Love the boxes. Do you remember where you ordered the tiles from? My wife loves hummingbird's and one of those might get me out of the doghouse sometime. Never hurts to have insurance laying around. The optical illusion of the grain adds interest to the box IMHO. Know what you mean about saw upgrade. Just did the same.

Really like your pinhole cameras. Do you use them?

bamasawduster: I got the tiles from http://www.tierrayfuego.com however it appears they no longer carry that particular design anymore. As for the cameras, I do use the crappy ones, the nicer ones have gone to others.

Beautiful job. and I understand your frustration with the folding table saw. I have a Craftsman folding saw. Lets just say I'm glad no kids are around when I'm using it. It's either scream profanities or take a hammer to the saw.
