Project Information

My intension was to cove cut a piece of lumber 20" x 2" and make a box out of it that is rounded on the outside in the same contour as the inside and connect with a finger joint that is also following this contour, well …. is did not succeed in that.
Therefore I decided to finish it with a miterjoint and a spline, the entrance opening that I was left with turned out to be too small for a convenient use so I glue it up therefore it has to live its life just as an object to look at.( you could maybe use at as an Urn though)
I am still happy with the result afterall sometime you just end up where you end up LoL.
I would be interested is somebody knows a way to make such a joint that I was after in the firstplace.

Interesting form.
I actually like the form and while it may not have "succeeded" in design you had in mind it is the ability to experiment that makes this box a success in my opinion. Another spline in the mitered corners might have made it a bit more structurally sound but I do like the band on the mitered edges. If the lid is still removable then it is a box that can be used. Keep trying and its good to see a little unconventional designs.
Thanks for sharing.

I love thinking outside the box. I'm constantly saving scraps to try and put together later.

No stink on that! Great design.
As far as finger joints, perhaps:
1. Bandsaw the curves on four short pieces.
2. Glue cutoffs back on.
3. Cut finger joints.
4. Remove cutoffs and proceed.

Just a theory…

First off, the wengue details are super, the grain in the top piece is fantastic. Overall, a great design.

Just a thought here, could you cut at about halfway of the top curve, and hinge the top piece as the lid?

I like the looks of this, using cove material was an "outside the box" idea …. no pun intended

It's interesting. I had just gotten a library book, with a bandsaw box in it, and it looks much like your box here. Sometimes it isn't how you got there, or even if you meant to get to that exact place, but when you've arrived, hey relax with it, and stay a while. Nice box.
