Project Information

Hi folks,

This is a box I made as a wedding gift for a good friend.

It is made of Goncalo Alves for the sides, with a 4 corner match and finger joints. There is also a strip of Mahogany. The lid insert is made of figured black Walnut as well as the wooden hinges and finger pull.

The finish is several coats of danish oil. It's a bit hard to show on photos but it has a nice luster all over and the walnut figure looks very nice and shimmery.

The box is 11×7 inches, and I think it has a bit of an African feel.

Thanks for looking!

Lovely indeed. Great use of very attractive wood. I really like the hinges. One of the best looking hinge designs I've seen. Well done!

Thanks!

The hinges are not what I had set out to do originally, but like mostly anything I build, they completely changed as I was making them…

Haha, thanks Roger :)

Yes, I will definitely be making more between pieces of furniture. While it can be tricky and fiddly, it requires a lot less material and so it's a lot more affordable for me.

A fine box. I like the finger joints and the wooden hinges are superb. Did you line the box?
The figured Walnut is exceptional.

Thanks Ruddy. It is not lined. I might try that on a future box. The bottom is Mahogany.

Farrout, I did not take more detailed photos of the hinges as I had little time before packing the box.

They are made from walnut rectangles that were glued into grooves into the back of the box, after the lid was cut off. The 1/8 holes were drilled into the top portions before gluing and into the top part of the central pieces. The shapes were done carefully with a spindle sander until I was satisfied with them, getting them flush with the back of the box on each end. The central pieces were attached to the top with some brass rod. I then aligned and clamped the lid part, then folded the central pieces and glued them into the bottom part of the hinges. It had to be a tight friction fit and I used liquid hide glue for everything.

I had to make sure it was all drilled and shaped right to allow the hinge to pivot properly.
