Very Nice!

I like the color contrasts between the top and the sides.

Nice Job. Can't tell for sure, perhaps the sides are birch, possibly ash?

Looks like alder for the top and birch for the rest.

You have made a very attractive Christmas gift. I liked the use of dowels.

If this is just gift wraping, the gift must be out of this world.
This really is a green box since you repurposed the wood.
Nice box.

It does look like it could be Birch based on the even grain pattern and light brown sapwood. One way you might be able to test it, if you have leftover, is to apply stain to it. Rick Peter's book, Woodworker's Guide to Wood, states that, "When stained, the difference between heartwood and sapwood is barely noticeable." (p. 29)

Very nice looking box, btw.

at first picture the top looks like Cherry with either an Oak or Hickory handle on top of it and I believe the sides and bottom are Hickory as well . The top in the third pic doesn't resemble Cherry from that angle any longer . Did you stain the top with something ?

Very nice box. I really like the dowels in the ends. Did you leave them proud as in craftsmen style or flush them? Nice gift.
