Project Information

I was cutting up some flame box elder blanks getting them ready for bowls and some of these cut offs reminded me of watermelon. I thought I would have some fun with these and keep a few. Then I noticed they were nicely book-matched and decided to make a small plaque to hold some keys for out at our trailer.
The bark fell off but I left the edge natural after joining them together. The bottom hook is a little larger than the rest to hold my cap so I don't get spoken to any more about leaving it lay around all the time when I'm inside. ha
They were only 1/4'' thick so I glued on a backer board for support. 11'' tall and 5 1/2'' wide, finished with lacquer.
My wife loves it and I will install it this weekend. I still have to make a small coat rack to match.

Great looking wood! That pattern in the middle reminds me of a Rorschach inkblot test card.

That is beautiful Dave, the most attractive key holder I have ever seen, The Book Marking is splendid and Picture 2 really does look like a watermelon. We are in Spring in Australia and my State is getting warm, so your project makes me want to look out for Watermelons soon, sliced and icy cold.
Regards,

Cliff.

Ok Dave. I see the watermelon in picture #2. But I also see something "ELSE" in pictures #1 & #3. But since this is a family orientated site, I better keep my (dirty minded) ideas to myself.

Nice key holder Dave! It's looks good.

Thanks Buster. Plum pretty, that's a good one.

Thanks Joe. Maybe if I put it in the fridge it will help remove the wood taste.

Ivan thanks. Too much beauty in there to wast any of it.

kdc68 thanks. I really feel honored that my wife will use it.

Hi Jim. When I get a bunch of logs I always slice up one for some project but not often think about book match. This one just jumped at me and I'm glad it did.

Hey Cliff, if you want I'll send you a piece of watermelon but I will have to warn you it's has a woody taste.

Ooooo-k Joe. I took a second look and I think you have something there.
