Project Information

My contribution to the Bowling Swap 2022.

My first attempt at a segmented bowl, and the largest turned item. It's 10" Dia x 5" high. Layered with Cherry, Walnut and Maple. It was a fun learning exercise making up the segment rings then gluing the rings together.

My press for gluing, just 2 sheets of plywood with nutted althread.

My lathe set up which is an old Shopsmith,

I finished this with Danish Oil, the used Howard Beeswax and buffed.

The second item, the small lidded bowl is Myrtle just under 3" Dia x 2-3/4" high with a Bloodwood finial. This one was a little tricky due to running into knot near the top. (no photo)

I turned the exterior shape and drilled a deep mortise for the finial prior to cutting the top off.

Shot with the finial blank

I then hollowed out the base, got a little thin at the bottom. Then placed the finial blank in the chuck and hollowed the top a little. And fit the top to the base. Shooting for a nice pressure fit. Turned out to have a nice little pop sound once completed.

Then flipped around to turn the finial. This little guy was finished with the Howard Beeswax, lost count of the number of coats.

And to finish it off my mark, which I think I will keep and get a branding iron. This one was carved out using a small veining carving tool.

Thanks to Drsurat for putting the swap together and running it. And to all participants, well done job with the swapped items.

Thanks for the cool projects, Eric. I will probably have to hide that little lidded bowl when my daughters visit so one of them does not walk off with it. The friction fit on the lid is very pleasing so when I walk by it, I usually pick it up and play with it for a couple of minutes. Heck, I might have to hide if from me because I get distracted when I stop to fiddle with it and forget what I was doing. :)

Thanks Dick. Now don't cut yourself short there.

Thanks Nathan, glad your happy with them. I gear ya on the distractions, there are times when I walk into a room and I need to stop and think what I was after.

Thanks Dave D. I used what I dad in stock for the segments, and fiddled with the layering a bit. The little lidded bowl was fun, I plan on turning some more of those.

Nice work on the segmented bowl, but the lidded bowl kinda steals the show, I think. Great job, Eric!

Beautiful work Eric! That's a fantastic result for your first segmented bowl. My first (and only) segmented bowl ended up being a wall sconce… I really like the little lidded box too and the bloodwood really compliments the wood well. Great work :)

Dave P, Thanks. They were both fun to turn, and getting use to the Nova chuck. There will be more lidded bowls coming.

Kenny, Thanks. My next segment should be better now that I build a sled to cut the segments. I think the Myrtle and Bloodwood go together well also. I picked up more Bloodwood yesterday, I really like how that turns.

Pottz, Thanks. The segment bowl almost didn't ship, the better half wanted it. The lidded bowl was fun. A word of advice, finish either the top or bottom first. Then as you turn the other, sneak up on the fit, keep checking as you go. (The cedar one I did ended up being a little loose, used calipers and that was a mistake).

Ivan, Thanks. I tried to get a good flow with the layers of the rings.

That's a big sucker for you first segmented turn.

And a piece made by a pro.

I really like your press. Simple but elegant.

Best Regards,

James, Thanks. Yes it was a big one, just about to the limit, I was just hoping that the thing would not fly off.

As for the press, I wanted something simple and it git the job done.

Jim, Thanks. These swaps ate fun and addictive. Along with the fact that they challenge one to push past some limits.

The little lidded bowl caught my eye. Something about the grain and the shape really makes it stand out.
