Project Information

This is the final piece of a bedroom set. The primary wood is cherry with spalted maple on the door and handles of wenge. The side uprights are maple. It's finished with dewaxed shellac.

My original intent was to dovetail the drawers but dovetails on a curve proved to not be fun and beyond my expertise so I went with the dowels and like the way they look. They should be plenty strong.

The drawers and doors were curved with bent laminations and a vacuum press.

I like to mock up ideas first with Sketchup and sometimes with a Photoshop drawing before I commit to starting a project. I did both here. There were 20+ photoshop iterations and I'm glad for the effort. Proportions for the entire dresser I got by making cardboard cutouts (old refrigerator boxes from the nearest store were used). Proportions for the legs were gotten by making prototypes from cheap wood.

A stunning piece. Curved dovetails beyond your expertise? ANYTHING curved is beyond my expertise. Great work.
