Project Information

One more last minute gift. I wanted to make something small for my godfather - whom I'm staying with right now. The design for these little bottle openers actually came from a gift my sister brought back for me from Cameroon. The pan-head screws catch the back side of the bottle cap, and you push the handle down (rather than most bottle openers we use which catch the front of the cap and you pull up - bending the cap and opening your beer) The top one is Ash with a walnut accent stripe, and has a hole on the proximal end to hook on the bar, or attach a string. The other one has an Ash bottom, walnut stripe, and spalted Elm top. Also imbedded underneath the elm top are six little 1/2" diameter disk magnets. It (should) stick to the refrigerator - except right now the surface is so smooth is just slides down. I need to put some little rubber feet so it won't slide. An added benefit of the magnets: after you open the beer, the cap sticks to the opener ever-so-slightly, so it doesn't go flying on the floor.

These little guys didn't take too long to slap together, and my godfather loves them. I gave them to him sans finish - so that will happen tonight.

For reference sake, I used #8×3/4" screws. Each handle is about 3/4" - 7/8" thick. After all the sawing was complete, I just HAD to figure out how far out the screws had to protrude, so the only way was research (open a beer!)

Also, I'm sure it depends on geography, but I found the magnets at JoAnn Fabrics. Michael's and Hobby Lobby only had very weak ones.

Nice project. I also will copy this one. But will probably take me more than one day. LOL

I have a six pack of Moose Drool to test it on

If you are doing too much "research" it might just take more than a day!

I'm intriguied by your challenge. First of all, are you sure all magnets are oriented the same? That could make a difference.

Next, More Magnets! Lee Valley has had them, and they're so strong it is very hard to separate two of the 3/4" ones. I would guess with two of these you would no longer experience Norge Creep. These come with an inset washer which, I am told, focuses the magnetic force. So you could Forstner out your hole, screw in the receiver, pop in the magnet without having to refinish the piece.

I don't think the silicone or bumpers are the answer. More Magnets!
