Project Information
I made this board as a thank you gift for a very dear friend. Her father and uncle cut down a family farm walnut tree decades ago and had the lumber milled, stacked and air-dried just sitting there. She knew of my love of hardwoods and woodworking and loaded it all up on a trailer and dropped it off at my house. I wanted the very first project to go to her as a thank-you gift that would also serve as a constant reminder of her father and the farm.
I loved the burled walnut with the contrasting lighter sapwood and was able to highlight it by book matching two of the boards. The 1/4" curved splines are three strips of 1/12" maple. The finished size is 12.5"x18"x7/8" with a chamfered edge.
I used a Fibonacci Gauge to lay out the working dimensions of the board and spline amplitude, as well as the spline orientation.
The finish is Watco Butcher Block Oil followed by two coats of hand-buffed USP food grade mineral oil, blended with Carnauba wax and beeswax.
