Project Information

This is a ring of bois d'Arc (Osage, hedge, et al) I made for myself a couple weeks ago. I have a metal wedding band but it's never fit that well. I honestly think this is more attractive too. The color has already darkened quite a bit… It just keeps getting better looking!

I've made a couple rings for my wife in the past few months but they've both already cracked. The grain orientation on this one seems to be sturdier. It also helps that this one isn't a slender as the ones I made my wife. I'm in the process of making her a new one right now. Fingers crossed it holds together this time…

Thanks for looking!

I love Osage orange and have never hear is called Bois D' arc. I have heard of hedge and the Indians called it bow wood because they made their bows out of it. When used for fence posts, it will last 100 yrs in the ground because it does not rot. I made a stool out of it this winter and 2 shut the box games.

Cheers, Jim

@Jim- similarly, bois d'arc is French for "wood of the bow" because they observed the native Americans using it in that manner. I guess that's the name that sticks for me because that is how it was first introduced to me. I sometimes find posts and stays of it on my parents' land. Most of the barbed wire has rusted away. It's a favorite wood of mine.
