Project Information

I have had a bocce ball set for sometime, but have never really liked the cheap metal carrying that came with it. I was messing around in the garage and decided it'd be nice to build something nicer to hold the set of balls. I had a bunch of maple that was taking up space, so that's what I used primarily. The design is just something I came up with along the way; it certainly wasn't thought out thoroughly. I think if I were to build another one, I'd use less wood to minimize the overall weight. That said, I still like the way it turned out-especially with the oak bandings. As you can see, there's a main area for the 8 bocce balls, and two extra compartments for the jack ball (or Snitch) and a tape measure. I'm by no means a bocce ball fanatic, but I thought this would add some style to my set for those occasional uses.

Brandon, its OK. Its OK to be a Bocce ball fanatic.

Cool little project. After my bench build, I definitely will need to do the same as you. I need to come up with some projects to use up the scraps and cut-offs.

Thanks for sharing.

Did you use any fancy pants joinery?

Haha, maybe we can have a lumberjocks bocce tournement, Scott. No fancy-pants joinery on this one, other than the through tenons of the center divider/handle. I actually used the nail gun a little more than I'd like to admit on this one.

Nothing wrong with a nail gun and glue when want to get something done.

I always knew you had balls! It certainly looks good. Sometimes its best to go without the fancy pants joinery.

Especially when you still haven't finished the rocking chair that you promised for your pregnant wife. Had I taken my time on this tote (e.g., hand-cut dovetails), I would have been in trouble.

Sweet Tote man, I bet you'll be whipping out the game more often now just to show off your work.

"pardon me - while I whip out my bocce balls"

Sorry, I can't help it.

Funny, I had to read Mauricio's comment twice. The first time my mind just read it as "Sweet Tote man, I bet you'll be whipping out your balls more often now just to show off your work."

ok, more coffee.

Very cool. I'm more of a drinking beer, smoking a cigar, and talkin smack with friends while the grill is cookin low and slow on a rare sunny day here in Seattle fanatic. And bocci ball facilitates exactly that :)

With the balls on one side and the handle in the middle, is the offset CG noticeable when carrying the box?
