Project Information

After seeing a few other bluetooth speakers on here, and missing being out of the low voltage trade for a little over a year now, the desire to tinker got the best of me. I decided I HAD to replace my current shop speaker: a built in bluetooth speaker on an LED shop light. The light is great, but the speaker is mono, low volume, and lots of noise.

So the last week I took off time from work to enjoy a little staycation, organize my shop, and maybe tackle a small project. I ran to my local mill Wednesday and picked up one of the last pieces of walnut he had (in his bargain barn, as it was roughed to 3/4" thick), as well as some maple. I ordered the bluetooth transceiver board, power supply, and toggle switch from Amazon, and picked up a pair of 4" Kenwood car speakers from Bestbuy.

The holes for the speakers are 3 5/8", with a chamfer. All lumber used was milled to 1/2" thickness. This was the first time I used my porter cable dovetail jig to do box joints, and I wasn't thrilled. I got a bit more tearout than I expected (can be seen if looking closely), and the joints are a little looser than I'd like. For finish, I used 3 coats of high gloss wipe on poly (I find using three coats actually leaves more of a Satin look). Dimensions are 11 3/4" wide x 6" high x 4 3/4" deep.

Oh, and as for the sound, WAY better than the previous speaker. Really fills the shop, which in my case, is a 2-car garage.

Thanks, PoohBaah! Figured for $12, I couldn't beat it. Some reviews mention that soldering a small wire to the bluetooth antenna will eliminate noise, but I only notice a very low level noise when it first comes on, so I didn't feel the need to address it.

Very nice. Would like to know what you used for speakers and Bluetooth board. Is it battery powered?

Much obliged! Speakers are some 4" Kenwoods (actually intended for car audio). Board is above. It's not battery powered, but I don't intend to take it outdoors, and I have outlets galore inside. A simple 12V DC power supply works for it. I got this one:

...mainly because the smaller ones lacked the current capacity for 2×25W channels. Also, by happy coincidence, the jack on this one fit the board perfectly.

I'm half way into making a similar speaker with the same BT board….

When I touch a screw driver to the antennae chip, it does quiet down the hiss, so I'm going to solder the wire on.

Would you mind sharing how you mounted the board and brought power into the box?

Did you partition the speaker into two cavities?

As I was limited on the depth of the box (my mill was super low on walnut, but I was dead set on it), I didn't have enough room to mount the board in the case, per se. Instead, I fastened it to the inside of the back using stand-off's, and there's enough slack in the wiring to allow removal and adjusting.

As for power, I drilled a 1/4" hole in the edge of the back to run the DC portion of the adapter in. It's a little clunky, since I have to pick up the power "block" with the speaker to move it, but this was a personal project and my first go, so I know what to plan for next time.

I didn't build separate cavities for the speakers, and now I'm wondering how it might affect the sound. I also haven't put any sound dampening material in the case yet, but I have some sound insulation I'm going to try inserting to see how/if it affects the sound much.
