Project Information

This is a blanket chest I made for the wife. As a begining woodworker, I learned the value of a jointer on this project and have since acquired one. It took a lot to work out the joints on the glued panels. I also learned that without a jointer it is very hard to deal with bows and cups in your boards. This was also my first experiment with building the finish up. I read many of the blogs on this site to learn of the different combinations possible. I used three coats of varnish and then brushed on three coasts of high gloss polyurethane on the outside. I only went two on the inside. It is made from white pine and stained with dark cherry chocalate stain mix from Sherwin Williams. My father-in-law is a house contracter and had some left over. Still learning though. I think that never ends.

big project to learn on… great start. I have a planer, but not the jointer… and I would like one for the same reasons. As substitute, for edges and glue joints I use router with straightedge guide and bearing bit but that won't do much for cup and warp on face.

I am not sure how you did the decorative molding around the bottom, but I like it. Is it one piece or two? I been trying to come up with something different on my boxes and chests, and I like the way yours turned out.

Tony, thanks for sharing. I like the success you achieved with the stain. I'm inspired with the quality of your workmanship with pine.

The decorative molding was two piece. The car polish wax helped with the shine on the lid. I think if I do another one I am going to try and either carve some designs around the bottom trim, or cut some beads with a router or cut some rosettes with the drill press.
