Project Information

The box earned it's name by containing a good part of two weekends worth of leisure time, along with packing a number or firsts: my first wood dowel hinge, a DIY dowel centering jig, miter spline in a dovetail pattern, use of a western dovetail saw (needed a wider kerf), glue+shavings for patches, and skill developed with dovetails and use of cyanoacrylate glues. Much experience was gained in the making of the little box, or- as Oscar Wilde put it- what old people call their mistakes. Thus the density metaphor.

Nicely done… I read your build blog and agree with your solutions. I used a brad point drill the diameter of the hinge in a block of hardwood. The hole was drilled about a half inch deep. I used the point of the hole to drill the hole for the pin drill. I also made a similar jig out of a piece of brass.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks all for looking in and for your comments. The box will hopefully serve when open and on my workbench as a place to keep little stuff accessible and organized when working. When not in use or in transit it will serve as a space efficient container for as Charles put it "this, that and the other".
@Redoak49- this box has me chomping at the bit to make more projects using the hinge dowel until I'm proficient at it. But so little time and so much else to do. Have you done any boxes with that this hinge?
@Ivan/majuvia- I have a transfer bevel on order that will need to find a spot in the box. I'm hoping to be able to make modifications to the compartments to provide an upper layer for the tool to lie above the pencil and hex wrench areas.
