Project Information

Just got a commision for a 5×11x 4"highly figured redwood table- The original slab was over 13 feet long- this is the trimmed down version. I'm in heaven!!!!!! The client- a local winemaker, wants malachite inlay down the middle. I might be asking for ideas on joinery for the base, and am trying to figure out sketchup, so my questions make sense- I have slabs of Monterey Cypress for the base.

Gotta love our local sawyer- don seawater!!!

That is one serious slab. I'd be afraid to work on it for fear of screwing it up, I don't think you get a second chance

Hello all,

Malachite is a soft copper ore (MOH hardness of 4-5) that I set in cracks with resin- essentially what lots of folks are doing with tourquoise these days.

I'm keeping the live edge. Its been stickered for 2 years- and is at 12% moisture

I have a 6 1/4 makita power planer for the initial flattening. It is usually used for log cabin construction. I will hit the high spots, then cross hatch it, and get it down to where I want it and then a use belt sander and sanding frame for the next stage.

Due to the check down the middle, I will probably break it into two Pcs-, and spline it back together, and fill the slight void with malachite. Splining will help to stabilize the reactionary area in the very center.

We actually moved it with 2 guys- Dried redwood is pretty light- under 250 lbs I'm guessing.

Yes, my back is sore today!!!

That is one nice stick of wood.

Think twice, masher three times, focus, concentrate, remember to breath, and then cut once.

I have a couple of sticks of oak that need a project that compare to the stick that you have to play with.

Do not forget to have some fun with this project.
