Project Information

Just got a commision for a 5×11x 4"highly figured redwood table- The original slab was over 13 feet long- this is the trimmed down version. I'm in heaven!!!!!! The client- a local winemaker, wants malachite inlay down the middle. I might be asking for ideas on joinery for the base, and am trying to figure out sketchup, so my questions make sense- I have slabs of Monterey Cypress for the base.

Gotta love our local sawyer- don seawater!!!

I hope you're a knuckle-dragger, otherwise you are going to have a hard time planing the middle of that board!

Wow, I could make 5,000 wine bottle stoppers out of that bad boy. (Just kidding). Sounds like a great project to work on, have fun with it. When should we expect to see the finished project?

Wow that would (wood) make a few pens LOL. Seriously nice and big although thin in comparison you may find it cupping unless you watch out! Now well done and as always have fun.Alistair

Andy, you're the envy of this website!!!! slab of wood that big would aesthetically seem to demand an equally large base so as to be in proportion, ...yet not take away from the figuring of the slab top. good luck and keep us posted.

What ever the end product is I believe you're going to need three boys and five gorillas to carry it into the client. Honestly, I'd be awed, thrilled and petrified as I looked at that slab and started to work.

I had to look up Monterey Cypress since I thought most cypress was in Louisiana. Never knew it grew in California. You are one lucky guy. More pics will be very welcome.

are you leaving the live edge or making it square all around? either way it`ll look sick.

if you like the dovetail cleat, take a look at the table posted on lumberjocks. (get the scoop on lumberjocks first, ... table was also posted on Fine Woodworking last year, ... joinery shows up in current issue of FWW). here's the link at lumberjocks.

the table weighed well in excess of 450 lbs, and needed to be reassembled on site. I saw this joint use on english tables over 300 years old. i was using some old (cracks, worm holes, nail holes) salvaged lumber, and the dovetail kept the top structurally aligned and in one piece, ... even if worse comes to worse.
