Project Information

Just got a commision for a 5×11x 4"highly figured redwood table- The original slab was over 13 feet long- this is the trimmed down version. I'm in heaven!!!!!! The client- a local winemaker, wants malachite inlay down the middle. I might be asking for ideas on joinery for the base, and am trying to figure out sketchup, so my questions make sense- I have slabs of Monterey Cypress for the base.

Gotta love our local sawyer- don seawater!!!

That is one serious slab of wood. Sounds like a great project. What is a malachite inlay?

Seriously, how do you handle the slab or rotate it to work on opposite sides. Have fun, BTKS

Awesome chunk of wood - Do you hand plane the surface of this big guy or use some kind of router jig, etc?

Looks like you'll be having a lot of fun with this. Let us know which winery it'll be in so we can see it in person.

Wowsers!
That's no joke. Would make a grand wine-tasting table indeed.

You mentioned ideas for base joinery. I noticed that Fine Woodworking has an interesting sliding dove table base feature on the cover. It's a simple, elegant solution and one that might be interesting in this application…

But hey, I agree with RexMcKinnon - I'd be terrified to make the first cut on something that beautiful.

Good luck!

Awesome!! I hope that you plan for some of the usual wood issues, just on a larger scale. Like warping, movement and checking.
